The one secret at Cancun Airport luxury travelers don't know about
If you’ve flown through Cancun International Airport, you know it's no palace—but it’s also not the worst. There are festive boutiques for last-minute shopping, a handful of restaurants and plenty of seats. The people watching is also stellar: I love seeing all the sunburns on honeymooners, and even those little kids with that weird braid thing done to their hair is pretty entertaining. Like, WHY.
Anyway, back to Cancun Airport, which went through a massive expansion unveiled last year but, during peak hours, it can still feel like a zoo, which is why this secret outdoor patio is the best hideaway.
Tucked behind Guy Fieri’s American Kitchen + Bar, which you will not eat at, because we don't eat there, and way in the back, there’s a huge, outdoor patio that not a lot of travelers know about. The al fresco courtyard is a great way to chill out one last time under that awesome Yucatan sun. There’s a massive floor fan that helps circulate air and, for smokers, this spot is a haven (you can light up out here before your long flight home).
The only catch is that you have to pay $10 to enter, but that $10 applies toward food (burgers, wings, salads, etc). If you MUST, I recommend the turkey burger, the only thing on the menu that’s not a total mess. Obviously, you can apply the $10 credit to drinks too for that one last margarita, or a continuation of the margarita you had to dump before going through security.
Considering you have to be at the airport two hours before departure, and security runs a lot faster than you would think, it’s a great way to kill time, have a cocktail and soak up some rays before your flight back home. Just make sure to make time for the people watching. It's a total show, better than Coco Bongo and definitely a lot cheaper.
