Checking out Miami's first and only Himalayan Salt Room
Salt may be the worst when it comes to water retention (especially when traveling) but we all know, physically, it heals. Take a dip in the ocean and you'll feel instantly revitalized and refreshed (as long as you don't get stung by a jellyfish or find an inter-dimensional, underwater wormhole to another galaxy. JUST KIDDING. That only happened to me once.). Anyway, Ame Spa + Wellness at Turnberry Isle Miami found a way to heal by way of salt without getting wet.
After a massive renovation, Ame Spa + Wellness (pronounced "ah, may" and about 30 minutes north of South Beach) feels brand new. The 20,000-square-foot sanctuary went a next-level, more holistic route with its Himalayan Salt Room, replacing the traditional sauna in both separate men and women's facilities. Inside the therapeutic salt room, guests feel rejuvenated and purified with deep exhalations, and it's a beautiful space with soft, back-lit amber lights. SERIOUSLY. It was refreshing and pretty amazing. I'm not a big fan of saunas, because you just sit there and think about all the bad foods you ate that day, but this salt room was cool to the skin and you actually feel an effect happening while you sit there.
I should also mention guests using the spa have access to an aromatherapy steam room, relaxation lounge and a fitness center. I loved that the men's facilities included high-end, organic skincare products for guests to use. No, seriously. This genuinely excites me because a) I love sampling skincare products and b) it's nice to have face wash, face serum and moisturizer after doing the wellness circuit, especially if you're not staying at the hotel.
Going the whole nine yards with the Himalayan theme, Ame Wellness featured an Amethyst Himalayan Massage ($149/50 minutes), which takes place on a bed of quartz, as you can see in the image. It's meant to draw out impurities and heal. It's a little gimmicky but I like gimmicks. I appreciated the effort and thought put into the experience, which also included sound therapy.
Ame Spa + Wellness is worth the trek from South Beach or Miami Beach if you're going to make a whole night out of it with dinner at Michael Mina's Bourbon Steaks, the signature restaurant at the resort. The steakhouse is glam and fancy, and my steak was perfectly seasoned and grilled. My favorite part of the dinner was the assortment of French fries with housemade dipping sauces to start (rather than a basket of bread). Everyone knows French fries is my weakness! And don't even get me started on dipping sauces.
